Río Abajo State Forest, located between Utuado and Arecibo and by the Tanamá River and Dos Bocas Lake. Encounter a great diversity of wildlife, giant mahogany trees, wetlands, a complex system of caves, archaeological and historical resources as well as rivers and reservoirs.

Deep in the karst region of northern Puerto Rico, you will encounter an extensive system of hills, plateaus, ditches, valleys, sinkholes, and mogotes. 

The forest holds over 175 exotic tree species scientifically managed to obtain high-quality wood used mostly by artisans. Some representatives of the native vegetation that is found in the forest are carob, mastic, hairy camasey, cannelloni, capá Blanco, ceboruquillo, male cedar, Ceiba, cojoba, heart, cork, ruby hawthorn, guano, guara, higuerillo, jobo, maga, coyor palm, and tabaiba.

An ongoing research project with endemic and endangered species: erubia (Solanum drymophilum), rosewood (Ottoschulzia rhodoxylon), Daphosis hellerana, nigua (Cornutia obovata), Cordia bellonis and Clidemia portoricencis. Plenty of fauna in the forest, with thirty-four species of resident birds, reported. The species of common birds observed in open places or in the fringe of the forest are pitirre, rolita, turtle dove, nightingale, and thrush. Studies are being done and up to the present, there are 60 individuals of guaraguaos. In addition, in 1983 a research work was started on the Puerto Rican parrot, with the Jose Luis Vivaldi Lugo aviary which keeps the reproduction of the Puerto Rican parrot.

Weather Mostly rains in August and October with an average of 1936 mm per year and a temperature average of 22 °C. An elevation between 200 and 424 meters.
